The Ministry of Defence is conducting an investigation following the accidental sending of emails containing classified information to a country allied with Russia. It was discovered that a “small number” of emails intended for the Pentagon were instead sent to Mali due to an error in the email address. The emails were sent to an address ending with Mali’s “.ml” domain instead of the US military’s “.mil” domain. The incident in the UK was reportedly on a much smaller scale compared to a similar error in the US, where millions of military emails were sent to Mali. The Ministry of Defence assured that the emails did not contain any information that could compromise operational security or technical data. They also emphasized that sensitive information is shared through secure systems to minimize the risk of misdirection. The Ministry of Defence is currently working on improving information management, data loss prevention, and the control of sensitive information.
