Why We Moved to Little-Known Midland, Texas, Right After College
Avery and Bayler Boydston made the decision to move to Midland, Texas after graduating college in 2019. Midland is an isolated town in West Texas that is experiencing a growing population of young adults. This has contributed to a thriving social life for the Boydstons, as the city is catering to the needs and preferences of young people with high-end gyms, restaurants, and coffee shops.
Avery shares that while she was initially hesitant about moving to Midland, her husband Bayler had always wanted to live there due to the abundance of career opportunities in the oil and gas industry. Bayler, a mechanical engineering graduate, was already working full-time in Midland at the time.
After renting apartments for a while, the Boydstons decided to pursue homeownership in Midland. They were initially concerned about the volatile nature of the oil industry, given Bayler’s occupation. However, they made sure to stay within their means when buying their first home in October 2020. It was a three-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,800-square-foot starter home that they purchased for $285,000. They later moved to a different property and rented out their first home, ultimately buying their second property for $315,000. Despite the relatively high cost of housing in Midland compared to other cities, the Boydstons believe they are still saving more money on housing compared to their friends in other areas.
Midland is actively investing in its economy and community to support its growing population. The city is seeking to attract more businesses, including high-end gyms, restaurants, and coffee shops, to improve its economic landscape. While many outsiders may perceive Midland as lacking in entertainment options, the Boydstons argue that their lives are not much different from their friends in other parts of Texas. They still enjoy dining out and engaging in recreational activities.
The Boydstons feel that their quality of life has improved in Midland. Avery was able to pursue a career in teaching and now works as a seventh-grade teacher at a private school. Bayler’s salary is increasing annually, and they have been able to expand their savings significantly. Additionally, they have developed a thriving social life and have made lifelong friends in Midland.
Overall, the Boydstons cannot imagine living anywhere else. They believe that the opportunities available in Midland, both financially and socially, have allowed them to build a fulfilling life that would have been more challenging to achieve elsewhere.
